First day in Paradise

Had a good night's sleep with just a sheet for bed covering. Slept well.

Today is warm and sunny but there is a strongish breeze and some cloud. Very warm though so its shorts and jandals all round.

After a cold shower the proprietor has now remembered to turn the hot water on!

We had a pretty forgettable dinner at The Boat Shed last night but it was the only place open at 8:30pm!

Breakfast was at the Koru Cafe and was the usual good value (eggs and bacon all round). Lots of chickens running loose as per usual with many chicks as well. The fact that no dogs are allowed on the island means the population growth of these birds is unstoppable. We have ordered some Ribeye steaks from them with salads for tomorrow night's dinner. They supply the packs and we BBQ it here at the unit.

We asked Steve (the owner) about renting a car and he said I have one going out this afternoon but you can have it for an hour or so this morning so we could get some shopping done. He just handed me the key and off we went. No formalities here obviously.

Groceries here are expensive (as we already knew) but the scarcity of some items means you have to shop around. Finally managed to find some Heineken in 6-packs for $18.00. Cheaper than the 12 pack at the main store for $42.50 - but then they didn't have any to buy so all good there.

Miriam was gob smacked when we bought 2 tomatoes for 28c ($3.00/kg) when they are around $15/kg at home). Also bought a hand of local bananas for $5. Very cheap and great taste. You aren't allowed to break them up so had to buy quite a few! The Pawpaw was $2.
